BBC iPlayer coming to the Nintendo Wii

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7338344.stm It's just been announced that the BBC will soon be releasing it's iPlayer for the Nintendo Wii. This is great news - the iPlayer is a very useful tool to catch up on all the programmes you've missed on BBC over the last week. However, it's limited to downloading to Windows computers. Most people will have their Nintendo plugged into their main TV, so this is a great, easy way for them to view iPlayer programmes on their TV.

Rangers 1 - Celtic 0

Report from the weekend's game A crucial game for both clubs, billed as a title decider by some. Rangers went in with the upper hand, having won the last 3 games against Celtic without conceding a goal. After an initial scrappy 15 minutes, Celtic had more of the play, surprisingly getting the better of Rangers 5 man midfield. McGeady had the beating of Broadfoot down Celtic's left wing, but could not make any telling crosses. A couple of chances fell to Scott Brown, McGregor standing up well to his close range effort, which he was hampered in by the attention of Whittaker. Had he went down, a penalty and a red card would probably have been the result. However, despite this decent first half display, the game turned in the way many of the Walter Smith led performances did in the nineties. A superb bit of passing by Kevin Thomson and Darcheville, saw the Celtic defence split, and Thomson slotted the ball home (pictured). The psychological damage done by this sucker punch was apparent in the second half. A Celtic side which had looked up for it in the first half looked to have lost their way. The Rangers defence comfortably soaked up any pressure that was thrown their way, with only one scare, when Hinkel fired off a fantastic shot to met with an equally fantastic save by Alan McGregor. The later part of the game could've brought a flurry of red cards - McManus for a poor challenge, Naylor for a worse one, and Thomson for diving - all 3 were on yellow cards already, but ref Stuart Dougal kept his cards in his pocket. A crucial victory for Rangers, and one which sees them firmly in the driving seat for the title. Anything other than a Celtic win in the next old firm game in 2 weeks time will surely see the title return to Ibrox.

The 15th Friday Animal

This animal is the Jerboa. It's a specialized type of rodent, which died out in Europe millions of years ago, but still lives in Africa. It has a couple of cool abilities - firstly, being able to jump a full metre in the air to escape predators - an impressive feat for it's size. secondly, a very unusual trait for this kind of animal - it does NOT drink ANY water!! A very usual skill in it's usual desert habitat - it gets all the moisture it needs from the food it eats.

Today's Friday animal is the Sun Bear. This bear is the smallest of the bear family. And like many other members of the bear family, it is endangered. (by it's only natural predator, humans). It's called the sun bear because of the distinctive marking on it's muzzle.

This weeks Friday animal is the Long Eared Owl. This lives in America, Europe and Asia. It tends to live in nests abandoned by other birds, and does it's hunting at night. It can turn it's head 135 degrees, so can look right over it's shoulder (but can't quite turn completely in the opposite direction, as is often thought about owls) Also, it's eyes are fixed in the their sockets - i.e. they have to turn their whole head if they want to look in that direction.

A trip to the aquatic world for this Friday animal. Possibly the best colour of any animal in the world, this is the blue starfish. Much better than it's better know relation, the standard orange starfish, this type is particularly common in Australia, near the great barrier reef.

Today's Friday animal is the hippo. This resident of Africa is another cool animal that is now endangered. However, Hippos, despite their cuddly reputation in children's stories, are actually pretty nasty, and are one of the most aggressive animals in Africa. So it could be a case of what goes around comes around.... Interesting hippo fact - being a mammal, they need air to breathe, but sleep underwater. When sleeping, every 5 minutes, they swim to the surface to take on more air - while still asleep!!

today's subject is the cat! cats have been mans best friend for about 8000 years; despite what dogs lovers say, there really is no competition in the mans best friends stakes - do people really want friends who are dirty, smelly, and stupid - all attributes most dogs possess in abundance. cool cat fact - cats have 32 muscles in each ear, which allows them to direct their hearing - each ear move independently, so allowing them to hear in whichever direction they want.

This weeks Friday animal is the Komodo Dragon. This fearsome creature is resident in Indonesia. Thought to have grown to this enormous size due to lack of competition in the food chain, it stunned Europeans when they found it in 1912. They are capable of doing severe damage to humans, but generally are not aggressive unless approached by someone unfamiliar, or if they feel threatened. Interesting fact about them - because it does not have a diaphragm, it cannot suck water when drinking, nor can it lap water with its tongue. Instead, it drinks by taking a mouthful of water, lifting its head, and letting the water run down its throat.

This is a Rwandan mountain gorilla. These type of gorillas as critically endangered, mainly because they get caught in traps meant for other animals, and because their habit is being slowly destroyed, and also because they can pick up some human diseases, as they are genetically very similar. This one looks unhappy because mountain gorillas don't like water (including rain), and will only cross rivers if they can avoid getting wet. They also have an in-bred fear of reptiles. They will avoid even small reptiles like chameleons. In fact, a mountain gorilla who has learned a high level of sign language in captivity, indicated that she was scared of crocodiles, despite having never been in contact with one. This gorilla, Koko, can use over 1000 signs, and can understand 2000 spoken English words, making her one of the most proficient non-human users of language.

China requires permit for re-incarnation

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20227400/site/newsweek/ Check this out - China have announced that you need a permit in order to be re-incarnated there. it's basically a power play so that they can pick the next Dalai Lama, who says he will control his re-incarnation to be outside of China (and specifically China controlled Tibet). So when this one goes, except two Dalai Lamas to appear. Oooops!

This cool customer (ha ha, he lives in the arctic, get it?) is the arctic fox. Not as stupid or annoying the arctic monkeys, this animal has been endangered despite some robust attempts at protection for the last 75 years. The problem is that his fur is quite popular, which you can kind of understand, as it is 100 times nicer than the mangy stuff you see hanging off the urban foxes that annoy city dwellers by going through their bins, and making baby-like crying sounds.

This is a ZONKEY! Yes, it's a REAL animal - a cross between a Zebra, and a Donkey. This animal actually occurs in the wild, and has also been bred in zoos. There are several other animals of this ilk, e.g. Zorses, Zonies - but none as cool as the Zonkey.

Today's Friday animal is a bit different from the previous 2 - the Spiny King Crab. This bad boy lives a few thousand feet near the bottom of the ocean, and as you can see is pretty mean. I certainly wouldn't ever want to meet one!

Today's Friday animal is a classic Scottish one - the Highland Coo. Adapted to live in the Highlands, this cow has long hair to keep warm (rather than fat) so it's meat is a lot leaner. It also eats a wider range of plants than a normal cow, so it's easier to keep in rocky/mountain environments. The Highland cow is now found throughout the world, and is seen as a large factor in the success of the American cattle industry. And more to the point - it looks cool. It's hair can be various colours, but the reddish shade in the picture is the highland coo.

The First Friday Animal

The first in a weekly feature looking at cool animals around the planet. First up are some very cute animals - 3 otter cubs! These poor wee things were rescued after losing their mum. They were found by a local farmer, who passed them to a rescue centre who hand reared them. The trio,called Splish, Splash and Splosh, have made a full recovery, and will be released back into the wild shortly.
